Carb Sense

by

One of the biggest frustrations with anyone who is trying to control his/her weight is the discussion about WHAT IS a carbohydrate and HOW MUCH can I safely eat?

I know that is one of the discussions that my husband and I have over and over again - it is mellowing out now because I have learned that he is going to do what he is going to do and there is little to nothing I can do to change that. What I CAN do is make sure the proper snacks are around for him.

Life Clinic has a great series of articles for diabetics. Some have to do with carbs such as All Carbohydrates are not alike!

Diet changes are necessary for diabetics - so it is necessary to learn what can and cannot be eaten. At one point in this journey hubby had a sheet given to him by his doctor telling him exactly how much of this or that he could eat.

The toughest measurement?

He could eat 18 (EIGHTEEN) tiny twist pretzels a day. It was my job to count them out and put them into a baggie for hubby. He knew that once those were gone he had hit his limit for the day.

Crunchy things are much harder for him to give up than sweet things. (he does quite well at that - unfortunately for my waistline and hip size, I do not do so well there)

I had to learn to hold my tongue whenever he brought home a five pound (FIVE POUND) bag of tiny twist pretzels from a local big box store. Remember, I no longer count out those 18 a day for him. Instead, he brings home the bag and sets it behind his chair. At night while watching tv he opens the bag and begins munching.

I wish there were an easier way to show him that the carbs he is eating in all of those pretzels are converting to sugar in his system. (easier than nagging that is)

But as a woman of size I understand totally the feeling of helplessness and the feeling of being cut off from something you enjoy. So, I just pray that he will be able to do all things in moderation where carbs are concerned.

What tips do YOU have that are tried and true with your loved ones - or yourself?
