Adult Onset Diabetes
First if all, before you all jump and say - that’s not what it’s called - please remember that hubby was diagnosed some 32 years ago. That is what they called it then - adult onset diabetes. Other names were non-insulin dependent and obesity related diabetes. Oh, and don’t forget sugar diabetes.
The proper term nowadays is Type 2 Diabetes.
Hubby had had weight problems all of his pre-teen and teenaged years. We married at 19 (typical for the 60s) and did what most broke newlyweds did - played hard, ate hard, drank hard - with the result being he became very overweight. (My own weight has been more of a yo-yo, but I have been blessed to date by not developing diabetes.)
Never one to drink much water, we noticed it when he became thirsty all of the time. His bathroom trips also increased - and he began to drop weight. Not much at first, but it was noticable. He was also never one to run to the doctor, but something made him do it this time. We were shocked when the diagnosis came back.
The doctor put him on an oral medication and an 800 calorie/day diet. 800 calories!!! He was constantly hungry - and who could blame him? Poor guy - that was barely enough to get him out of bed each morning.
As you can imagine the weight dropped quickly over the next few months. As did his readings - and soon the doctor took him off the medication and told him to “watch your diet.”
Come back tomorrow - I’ll try not to belabor it or bore you. But, I think it’s important for all type 2 diabetics to understand what can happen with your disease.
