7 Habits - Be Proactive!

Habit number one in the booklet encourages us to Be Proactive.

My mom used to tell me when I was little, that I couldn’t control how anyone else acted, or reacted to me. The only thing that I could fully control was myself and MY reactions to any given situation. (My mom, she’s a wise gal, that one!) The same philosophy applies here, to diabetes and how we react to the news and the steps we have to take in order to get it under control.

It’s not easy, of course, to change your way of thinking, and make the lifestyle changes in order to remain healthy. Who wants to give up bacon? (NOT ME!) Or potatoes drenched in butter (with bacon on top!)? Most often, the first reaction to any diagnosis is negative in nature. I have to change, I have to give up my favorite things, it’s to hard, I don’t want to, you can’t make me, no no no NO! We get stubborn, and determined to ignore the issues at hand.

And that’s perfectly natural - it’s ok to feel that way. It’s human nature to cling to what we know, instead of letting go and stepping forward into the unknown. The first step, however, is to remember that you are still in charge. You can decide how you’re going to respond to your diagnosis. Are you going to take control, or allow diabetes to control you?

There is a list of 7 self-care behaviors that we will also go into during this series, and the most important part of those behaviors is to change how we think about them. Instead of looking at them and saying “I HAVE to do this…” try shifting the psyche a little, and instead say “I CHOOSE to do this…”

It’s all about taking control - first in your head, so that your actions will follow!

Stay tuned for more of the steps throughout this week!
